we flew out to flordia a few weeks ago and had a few days before our cruise to see what ft lauderdale & miami were all about. first, we had never been to flordia before so when it came to booking a hotel we made the mistake of booking one right by the port since we weren't going to have a car. bad idea. we stayed in a dump the first night and i was scared.to.death. beau said the room reminded him of some of the houses he lived at on his mission in honduras. we will leave it at that and i'll try to forget about it. needless to say we were out of there the next morning.
my friend annalee russ and her husband live in miami and were kind enough to show us around some popular spots. we spent the day at south beach with her and that evening they took us to a local honduran restaurant and then to the everglades for a real flordia experience. both blake & beau served in hondruas [just different missions] so he knew of all the authentic places to go. beau was in heaven and loved introducing me to some of the foods he ate for two years. his favorites were baleadas & tropical banana soda.
the everglades was quite the experience. blake took us to go find some alligators and believe it or not they roped one down and got to take some pictures. it was funny because we had been out there for about an hour and were getting eating alive by mosquitos so annalee and i decided to go wait in the car till the guys had had enough and thats when all the action happened. oh well, i'm glad beau got to experience that. he loved it, definitely a once in a lifetime experience!
[sidenote: when we first saw the alligators i was a little freaked out, but in reality they are big dummies. they caught it by throwing graham crackers at it for goodness sakes. blake and annalee were saying that they only get vicious if you are cornering them or you are messing with their babies.]
